      The inauguration of the galerieofmarseille will take place on 17 November 2006, with the opening of Mi- chelangelo Pistoletto’s exhibition. Several emblematic works of the Italian artist’s career will be presented, each with a central theme: testimony of his key role in the Arte Povera Movement, expression of his relation to the Mediterranean sphere, and will to search for solutions for society’s transformation.

      Michelangelo Pistoletto was born in 1933 in Biella (Italy). From his first Mirror-Paintings (Quadri specchianti, 1961), that include the spectator in the work, or with the World Globe (Mappamondo) that he rolls in the streets of Turin in 1966, Michelangelo Pistoletto strives to make life penetrate art and to intervene as an artist in everyday life. He is linked to Arte Povera with such works as The World Globe (Mappamondo) and The Venus of the rags ( Venere degli stracci) (1966)

      All of Pistoletto’s projects are guided by his desire to develop the artist’s social position and his ability to deal with all subjects. He assures us that art, “the most complete and sensitive expression of thought”, can create new systems, in particular political ones, for civil society. This ambitious project has taken the form of the Cittadellarte Foundation in Biella, created in 1998, with the objective to carry out artistic projects for “a responsible social transformation” in all of the spheres of human activity (economics, politics, science, ecology, religion, education...).

      Love Difference, Movement for an Intermediterranean politics is one of the big projects begun by the Cittadellarte Foundation. It is a common work platform for the cultural actors of the Mediterranean that initiates and supports artistic projects in all socio-political fields. Love Difference was presented at the Venice Biennial and at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles where Michelangelo Pistoletto organised talks on the value of differences – social, economical, cultural and political – while seated around his Mediterranean Table (Tavolo del meditarraneo). It is a mirror table, reproducing the shape of the Mediterranean Sea, with chairs that come from the 22 countries that surround the Mediterranean.

      The New Infinity Symbol ( Nuovo segno del’infinito) is a recent message-work, depicting Michelangelo Pistoletto’s will to create new references and new systems of thought, which bring together art, science, economy, ecology, spirituality and politics, in order to open up positive evolutionary perspectives in the current geopolitical context. The New Infinity Symbol is made up of three rings, instead of the usual two-ringed sign. The central ring represents the third paradise. The first paradise is governed by nature; the second paradise is the artificial sphere created by man whose important growth is dangerous for the first paradise. The third paradise indicates a new phase in which humanity would find a balance between the artificial world and the terrestrial one. The third paradise is meant to inspire a responsible change of society that needs everyone’s involvement.

Le 17 novembre 2006 a lieu l'inauguration de galerieofmarseille, avec une exposition de Michelangelo Pistoletto. Plusieurs oeuvres emblématiques du parcours de l'artiste italien sont présentées, témoignage de sa place au sein de l'Arte Povera, traduction de sa relation à la sphère méditerranéenne, et expression de sa volonté de chercher dans l'art des solutions de transformation de la société.

Michelangelo Pistoletto est né en 1933 à Biella (Italie). Dès ses premiers Tableaux-miroir (Quadri specchianti, 1961), qui incluent les spectateurs dans l'oeuvre, ou avec la Mapemonde (Mappamondo) qu'il roule dans les rues de Turin en 1966, Michelangelo Pistoletto s'efforce de faire pénétrer la vie dans l'art et d'intervenir en tant qu'artiste dans la vie quotidienne. Il est associé à l'Arte Povera avec des oeuvres comme la Mapemonde ou La Vénus aux chiffons (Venere degli stracci, 1966).

Son désir de développer la posture sociale de l'artiste, de signifier sa capacité à aborder tous les sujets, guide l'ensemble de ses projets. Il assure que l'art, "l'expression la plus complète et sensible de la pensée", peut concevoir de nouveaux systèmes, notamment politiques, pour la société civile. Cette ambition se concrétise dans la création de la Fondation Cittadellarte à Biella en 1998, dont l'objectif est de mener des projets artistiques pour une "transformation sociale responsable" dans tous les domaines de l'activité humaine (économie, politique, science, écologie, religion, éducation…).

Love Difference, Mouvement pour une politique interméditerranéenne est un des grands chantiers engagés par la Fondation Cittadellarte. Il s'agit d'une plateforme de travail commune aux acteurs culturels de la méditerranée qui initie et soutient des projets artistiques dans tous les domaines sociopolitiques. Présentant Love Difference à la Biennale de Venise ou aux Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles, Michelangelo Pistoletto a organisé des discussions sur la valeur – sociale, économique, culturelle et politique – des différences, autour de sa Table de la Méditerranée (Tavolo del meditarraneo). Taillée dans un miroir reproduisant la forme de la mer Méditerranée, la table est entourée de chaises venant des 22 pays qui la bordent.

Le Nouveau signe de l'infini (Nuovo segno del’infinito) est une oeuvre-message récente, signifiant la volonté de Michelangelo Pistoletto de créer de nouvelles références et de nouveaux systèmes de pensée, unissant l'art, la science, l'économie, l'écologie, la spiritualité et la politique, afin d'ouvrir des perspectives d'évolution positives dans le cadre géopolitique actuel. Le Nouveau signe de l’infini, au lieu d’être constitué des deux anneaux conventionnels, en comprend trois. L’anneau central représente le troisième paradis. Le premier paradis est celui régi par la nature, le deuxième paradis est la sphère artificielle créée par l’homme, dont l’importance croissante constitue un danger pour le premier. Le troisième paradis désigne un nouveau stade où l’humanité trouverait un équilibre entre monde artificiel et monde terrestre. Le troisième paradis se veut inspirateur d’un changement responsable de la société, qui nécessite la participation de tous.
